Submission Guidelines – Please note that we do not accept submissions from outside of the UK, and will not respond if these are submitted.
We are one of the few publishers in Britain who still accepts unsolicited manuscripts from new authors. We would like to keep it that way – but we need your help.
Before sending us your submission, please note that we only accept submissions of literary fiction and non-fiction works with a strong literary or historical connotation. Please do not submit novellas, short stories, poetry, academic works, science fiction, horror, fantasy or other genres that do not fit in with our programme. We encourage you to study carefully our list, if you have the chance, to get a better idea of what we publish. We do have a children’s list but we are not currently accepting submissions for children’s literature.
We only accept submissions by post. Please do not send submissions by email, or they will be automatically rejected. If you are submitting by post, include a synopsis, two sample chapters and, if you would like your material to be returned in case of rejection, a stamped SAE (make sure you include full postage). Please allow up to six weeks for a reply. Submissions should be sent to the address above and for the attention of ‘The Publisher’. Please do not call our office to enquire about the status of your submission, as we are a very small team and receive hundreds of submissions every month.
If you are a translator wishing to submit your own work for publication, please send us a proposal by post, including your CV and a sample from the original text. If you would like your material to be returned in case of rejection, please enclose a stamped SAE with your proposal, or – due to the high volume of submissions – we won’t be able to return your manuscript. Please allow up to six weeks for a reply. Submissions should be sent to the address above and for the attention of ‘The Publisher’. Please do not call our office to enquire about the status of your submission, as we are a very small team and receive hundreds of submissions every month.
Proposals – We welcome proposals and ideas for our Classics list. Please email us your ideas and one of our editors will get back to you. If your idea is selected for publication, we’ll acknowledge your name in the book and send you two complimentary copies once the book is published.
Inspection Copies – If you are a teacher or an academic you can request inspection copies by emailing us. Please note that inspection copies are not sent out before the month of publication and are sent at our discretion. All our titles are available on 30 days’ approval to teaching staff considering course adoption or recommendation of at least 10 copies. For international adoptions, you will be referred to our local distributor in your area.
Foreign rights – If you would like to make an enquiry about the availability of foreign rights for any of our titles, please contact us via email, at foreignrights [@] almabooks.com.
Internships – Alma Books regrets to announce that in view of the government’s policy against unpaid internships we have suspended our programme. Please note that any applications sent to us may not be answered.
Other Comments – Alma Classics is committed to bringing you a wide range of high-quality titles from European literature, now accessible through new translations and a completely fresh editorial approach. As always, we would welcome your comments and feedback.
Due to the volume of unsolicited emails we receive every day, we regret that we cannot guarantee a reply if contacted by email.
