First published in 1853 and inspired by the author’s experience of teaching at a Brussels boarding school in 1843–44, Villette was Charlotte Brontë’s final novel. A story of thwarted love justly renowned for its penetrating psychological insight, it was praised by George Eliot as “more wonderful” than Jane Eyre, and by Virginia Woolf as the author’s finest work.
