Heinrich Heine
Heinrich Heine (1797–1856) is one of the towering figures of nineteenth-century German poetry. His radical political views led to many of his works being banned by the German authorities, and he lived as an exile in France for most of his adult life. His early poetry was famously set to music by composers such as Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn, among others.
