Ralph Manheim

Ralph Manheim (1907–92) was a graduate of Harvard University. He lived in Paris from 1951 to 1986, and in Cambridge, England until his death in 1992. Among his early works is a 1943 translation of Mein Kampf that is still in print. He subsequently became a full-time translator, working largely for the Bollingen foundation, where he produced English versions of numerous works by Carl Jung and Erich Neumann. He is best known for his literary translations of European authors, including Brecht, Grass, Handke, Hesse, and Céline. He also produced a complete retranslation of Grimms’ Tales for Young and Old.
