One of the leading figures in nineteenth-century Russian literature, Nikolai Gogol (1809–52) is best known for his satirical masterpiece, Dead Souls, and humorous plays and short stories such as The Government Inspector and The Overcoat, written in a highly original and often experimental style.

Benjamin Britten

Benjamin Britten (1913–76) was an English composer, conductor and pianist. He showed prodigious talent from an early age and first came to public attention with the a-cappella choral work A Boy Was Born. He leapt to international fame with his opera Peter Grimes in 1945. This was followed by eight other major operas, including Billy Budd (1951), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1960) and Death in Venice (1973), as well as other orchestral, choral and chamber works, which established his reputation as one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century.

Vincenzo Bellini

Vincenzo Bellini

Vincenzo Bellini (1801–35) was born in Catania and during his short life composed some of the most beautiful operas ever written, with long melodic lines that have rarely been equalled. Collaborating almost exclusively with the greatest librettist of his time, Felice Romani, he had enormous success throughout Europe. In addition to Norma, his operas include Il pirata, I Capuleti e i Montecchi, La sonnambula and I puritani.
