James Fenimore Cooper (1789–1851) is best known for his historical romances, which depict the sweeping majesty of the American frontier. The Last of the Mohicans, the second of the “Leatherstocking Tales”, is his most enduringly popular novel, and has captured the imagination of the reading public since its publication in 1826.

Antoine François Prévost

Antoine François Prévost (1697–1763) was a Benedictine monk who left the order, moved to England and the Netherlands and became an author under the name Abbé Prévost. Although best known for his novel Manon Lescaut, he wrote many other volumes of fiction, history and travel writing, as well as translating the works of Samuel Richardson, among others.
