Douglas Parmée

Douglas Parmée (1914–2008) studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, and during the War worked in RAF Intelligence at Bletchley Park, returning to a lectureship in French at Cambridge, where he was Fellow and Director of Studies at Queens’ College until his retirement to Adelaide, South Australia. He was a winner of the Scott Moncrieff Prize, and his many translations include Laclos’s Les Liaisons Dangereuses and works by Flaubert, Maupassant, Zola, Mérimée and Fontane, as well as lesser-known works by Vallès, Renard and Constant among others.

J.G. Nichols was born in Liverpool and lives on the Wirral. His first volume of poetry, The Flighty Horse, was published by Liverpool University Press. He has translated many of the greatest classics of Italian literature, including Dante’s Divine Comedy, Boccaccio’s Decameron and Leopardi’s Canti, and has been awarded the Florio Prize and the Monselice Prize for translation. Stephen Pearl

After receiving an MA from St John’s College, Oxford in Classics (Lit. Hum.), Stephen Pearl learned Russian in the RAF during National Service. Having joined UN as an interpreter from French, Russian and Spanish, he later became Chief of the UN English Interpretation Dept. (1979-94). He designed his own innovative Interpreter Training Method, which he has used in numerous universities in USA, Britain, Russia, Cuba, Spain and China, and published articles on translation and interpretation in several journals. Among his other book translations are The Death of Dolgushev by Isaac Babel and On The Battlefields Of The Cold War by Victor Israelyan.
